10 Tips to Maintaining Healthy Natural Hair

Here at Dosso Beauty, a large part of our mission is to share tips on navigating through your everyday beauty, especially when it comes to your hair. While rocking your natural hair is powerful, we know that it can also be stressful. You may think that it takes too much time, patience, or effort, and you might not know where to start when it comes to your natural hair. Don’t worry! We’ve come up with ten tips you can use to maintain healthy natural hair.

  1. Be Consistent with Your Routine

Keeping a wash routine is essential! Stay consistent with the shampoos and conditioners you are using and make sure they are the products you need. Find products that work for you and your journey, whether choosing products specializing in hydration, growth or even restoring your curl pattern. Your hair will appreciate the consistency! Try Dosso Beauty’s Coconut Oil Shampoo & Conditioner combo! They’re made with all organic ingredients and designed for all hair types.

  1. Avoid Product Overload

An overload of the product will suffocate your hair follicles, making it hard for your scalp to breathe. Over-saturating your hair isn’t always best. Find a happy balance and give your hair just enough of what it needs.

  1. Get Your Hair Trimmed

Get rid of those dead ends! You might be worried about the length but keeping split ends will prevent your hair from growing. It's good to get your hair trimmed every 8 to 12 weeks. You may think of it as cutting your length but trimming your hair will make room for growth. Your hair will grow longer and thicker, most of all it will be healthier.

  1. Moisturize Your Scalp

Keeping your scalp hydrated is crucial when taking care of natural hair. It decreases itchiness, helps with dandruff, and it can enhance your hair growth. Also, if you're one with an overly dry scalp, you can try a hot oil treatment. Hot oil treatments are great for getting extra hydration for the scalp. Try to avoid overusing oil products when moisturizing your scalp; too much oil can make your hair greasy and stiff.

Dosso Beauty’s oil-based Hair Elixir has the perfect blend of Coconut, Jojoba, Jamaican Black Castor, Peppermint and other essential oils to help moisturize, grow, and protect your hair. It’s lightweight, moisturizing, and won’t weigh your hair down.

  1. Detangle Your Hair

Detangling is something you will often do when caring for your natural hair. It can be painful and difficult to detangle your hair, especially if you're not using the correct tools. When detangling your hair, it's best to use a Dosso Beauty’s Recyclable Detangling Hair Brush, a wide-tooth comb, or your fingers. Using these tools will leave you with less breakage and will make your natural hair journey easier.

When detangling, start with sectioning your hair into 4's, and detangle your hair while damp. You can add some of Dosso Beauty's Coconut Oil Conditioner to your hair before using your Recyclable Detangling Hair Brush to detangle from end to root. After you finish each section, it’s helpful to put them in loose twists or braids so it stays detangled until you’re ready to wash or style.

  1. Protect Your Hair from Heat

Two words: Heat Damage. It's no secret that too much heat will damage your hair. It will ruin your curl pattern and cause breakage. Depending on how bad your heat damage is, you might stop using heat for some time and nurture your hair back to health, or you might have to cut off the damaged ends.

To protect your hair from heat, shy away from overusing flat irons. When you do put heat on your hair, be sure to use a heat protector before to reduce the heat damage. You can also give your hair a break from heat by letting it air dry instead of using a blow-dryer. Air drying will take longer, but it will give your hair a much needed break from additional heat.

  1. Try Protective Hairstyles

Get protective hairstyles throughout the year! Protective hairstyles like braids, faux locs, and crochet braids protect our natural hair from the cold, heat, and other weather. Usually, protective styles have longevity, which will stop you from over-styling your hair. If you need inspiration for your next style, head over to our Braid Corner where you can find styles and a braider in your area! Don’t forget to check our our Hair Extensions to grab everything you need before you go get your next protective style,

  1. Know Your Products

Even though a product is mainstream, it doesn't mean it's the healthiest product for your hair. When looking for new products, beware of the ingredients in the product. If your goal is to maintain healthy hair, try to avoid products that include chemicals like, Sulfate, Parabens, and Formaldehyde. These are just a couple of the substances that should not be in your hair products. Lucky for you, Dosso Beauty’s products are all vegan and cruelty-free! We take the guesswork out of knowing what’s in your products. Learn more about Dosso Beauty’s commitment to clean beauty here.

  1. Take Your Vitamins

Giving your hair the nutrients it needs includes eating fruits and vegetables, and taking daily vitamins. Your diet plays a big part in your body, even down to the hair on your head. Don’t think this means you need to turn into a health fanatic! It’s a gentle reminder to try to add in some fruit smoothies and veggies at dinner to get extra nutrients. Vitamins such as Zinc, Vitamin B, and Biotin are great vitamins to induce hair growth. Check out this Forbes Health article for more vitamins to enhance hair growth.

  1. Cover Your Hair at Night

Let's make sure we are wrapping our hair before bed. Protecting our hair when we sleep, making sure our braids, curls, or sew-ins stay neat for the next day. Whether you want to use Dosso Beauty’s Satin Braid Bonnet w/ Edge Tie or our Satin Edge Scarf, they both will get the job done for protection. Also, you can invest in a satin pillowcase for those nights that you want to let your hair breathe without wrapping it.

We hope these tips help you on your journey to maintain healthy natural hair! Remember: Maintaining natural hair is a journey that will be unique for each of us. Some things may work for you, and some may not. It might take longer for you to see the results you want, and that's okay! Our journey is beautiful, and there's no need to stress it. Use these steps to take the next leap on your journey to maintaining healthy natural hair.
